Knife River Training Facility

Challenge

  • Cracked substrate with poor aggregate mix
  • Tight deadline
  • All surfaces were finished, and existing floor finish heights had to be flush
  • Operational facility with staff in the building

General Contractor

Concrete Restoration Technologies

Installer

Chris Nath

Situation

With a very cracked and pitted substrate, the project required 7,000 sq. ft. of prep, crack treatment, prime, install, grind, hone, and seal in only 8 days due to a major event that was planned within the facility.

Solutions

Substrate Preparation – Shot Blasting
ARDEX ARDIFIX, a two-part polyurethane repair compound was used to repair all cracks in the substrate. ARDEX EP 2000™ Substrate Preparation Epoxy, the required primer for decorative applications of ARDEX self-leveling toppings, was applied to the substrate to prepare for the installation of ARDEX K 523™, a self-leveling concrete topping with aggregate surface.

Installation
ARDEX K 523™ was installed at 3/8” then cut with a metal 60 grit to open followed by 50g resins, densified and then sealed with a penetrating matte sealer. The client was pleased with the successful installation meeting the tight deadline.
